Немецкий проект Empyrium был образован в 1994 году. К его созданию приложили руку мультиинструменталист Маркус Шток, известный также как Ульф Теодор Швадорф, и клавишник Андреас Бах. В 1995-м вышло первое (и единственное) демо, "…Der wie ein Blitz vom Himmel viel…", благодаря которому группой заинтересовались люди из "Prophecy Productions". На следующий год под крышей данного лейбла был издан дебютный лонгплей, "A wintersunset". Этот атмосферно-фолково-металлический (с небольшим блэковым налетом) альбом был посвящен "ошеломляющей красоте природы".
Именно природа-матушка вдохновила музыкантов на создание подобного эпического произведения, что можно было увидеть хотя бы из названий песен. Помимо Швадорфа и Баха в записи диска участвовала Надин Молтер (флейта, виолончель), ставшая третьей участницей команды.
В 1997 году последовала вторая серия "зимнего заката", "Songs of Moors and Misty Fields". На этом альбоме Швадорф и компания продолжили гнуть свою меланхолично-романтическую линию. Несмотря на то, что блэковые элементы типа скриминга все же остались, на диске наметилась тенденция движения в сторону фолка. В некоторых местах электрические риффы уступили место акустической гитаре, а инструментов вроде флейт и различных свистулек стало заметно больше. Двумя годами позже на свет появилась третья студийная работа Empyrium, обозначившая вторую фазу развития проекта. На этот раз Швадорф и Надин (Бах куда-то исчез) полностью отказались от электроинструментов и ударных. "Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays" представлял собой полностью фолково-акустический альбом без всяких металлических штучек.
С предыдущими релизами его связывала лишь меланхоличная атмосфера да англоязычный вокал с сильным немецким акцентом. Композиции стали намного короче, при этом на "Where At Night The Wood Grouse Plays" наличествовало больше инструментальных фрагментов. Последним треком на альбоме стал акустический римейк песни "When shadows grow longer" с предыдущего диска.
Четвертого полноформатника поклонники Empyrium ждали целых три года, и вот, наконец, в 2002-м, предваренный синглом "Drei Auszuge Aus Weiland", он появился в продаже. Хотя "Weiland" был также неметаллическим альбомом, он заметно отличался от своего предшественника. Во-первых, на нем был представлен новый официальный вокалист, Томас Хельм, чей голос можно было услышать еще на "Where at night the wood grouse plays". Во-вторых, в отличие от всех предыдущих релизов все песни были исполнены на немецком языке, а не на английском. В-третьих, альбом вышел в трехдисковом варианте, разбитый на три концептуальных части – "пустыня", "лес", "вода".

27 сентября 2010 г. можно считать началом новой вехи в истории коллектива. В этот день Prophecy Productions и Швадорф официально объявили о воссоединении Empyrium. Швадорф заявил, что группа работает над новым материалом, но до выпуска полноформатника ещё далеко, т.к. Empyrium не собирается торопиться с изданием новых песен в ущерб их качеству.
Новая композиция группы, "The Days before the Fall", вошла в сборник "Whom The Moon A Nightsong Sings", наряду с новыми и раритетными треками таких исполнителей, как Ulver, Les Discrets, October Falls, Tenhi, Nest и др.
10 июня 2011 г. на ежегодном фестивале Wave-Gotik-Treffen в Лейпциге состоялось первое живое выступление группы. Вместе со Швадорфом и Хельмом на сцену вышли Neige и Fursy Teyssier из Alcest, Eviga из Dornenreich, виолончелист Christoph Kutzer из Remember Twilight. На скрипке играла Aline Deinert (Neun Welten), а за ударную установку сел Allen B. Konstanz (The Vision Bleak).
Второй в истории Empyrium выход на сцену запланирован на 21 января 2012 г. Концерт должен состояться в немецком городе Бохум.

Empyrium is a German symphonic/folk/doom metal and (later) neofolk band. Founded in 1994, by Markus Stock (mostly using the pseudonym Ulf Theodor Schwadorf) and Andreas Bach.
The band draws inspiration from nature as some of the album titles reveal. Consequently, Empyrium are often referred to as a dark folk band, expressing in their music (most conspicuously in the last two albums) sentiments akin to those expressed by some other 'legislators' of the genre, as Forseti, Orplid, and Ulver (Kveldssanger). Connoisseurs of dark folk will mention that many of Empyrium's compositions are true representatives of the genre, as, for instance, Dying Brokenhearted, The Shepherd and the Maiden Ghost ("Where At Night..."), Heimwärts, Waldpoesie, Die Schwäne im Schilf ("Weiland"). Intricately woven and always impregnated with an exquisite wistfulness or profound, remorseful sadness (Dying Brokenhearted), these compositions may be regarded as a manifesto of the dark-folkloristic gloomy and pantheistic Weltanschauung. The lyrics are mostly in English, though in Weiland only German is performed. Like the Norwegian black metal band Burzum, Empyrium also used Theodor Kittelsen's drawing on one of their album covers (Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays).
The sound on their first two albums, "A Wintersunset..." and "Songs of Moors and Misty Fields", following a demo entitled "...Der wie ein Blitz vom Himmel fiel..." can be described as a mixture of folk, doom metal and dark metal with large emphasis on symphony. These albums focus highly on creating a melancholic atmosphere. Utilizing both harsh and clean operatic male vocals with slow-mid paced melody-driven guitar work, beautiful strings and synthesizers, melancholic and atmospheric are truly the best words two describe these releases.
The following two albums, "Where at Night the Wood Grouse Plays" and "Weiland" are acoustic, display a constantly heavier neofolk influence. Instead of keyboards, the band switched to acoustic instruments such as acoustic guitars, violins, cellos and the flute. Operatic male vocals are still used, and in Weiland the band uses choir vocals and the piano. Though the music still remains dark and melancholic, Empyrium's music has largely moved away from heavy metal. Many people consider these two albums to be the apex of Empyrium's skill and some accomplishment of the band's - or rather Schwadorf's goal.
After their 2002 album, "Weiland", the band decided to stop recording. As Schwadorf himself put it, "Empyrium has explored nature-mystics since 1994, and after 8 years we feel to move on and made a glorious farewell to the concept with Weiland".
In August 2006, Empyrium's label, Prophecy Productions, announced publicly for the first time that a new album was going to be released in late November the same year. Called A Retrospective, it is a look back on the history of the band. Aside from ten remastered tracks from their previous albums, it contains a re-recorded version of The Franconian Woods In Winter's Silence from the album "A Wintersunset...", as well as two new tracks in the neofolk style of late Empyrium (Der Weiher and Am Wolkenstieg). The sixty-page booklet provides an extensive account of the musical influences of the band, and how Empyrium has changed over the years. The album leaked onto the Internet in early November 2006.
On September 17, 2010, Prophecy Productions and Schwadorf personally announced that the band had reunited and revealed plans to release a new album soon, beside contributing to the label's upcoming v/a compilation "Whom the Moon a Nightsong Sings".
