Small Fred - Letter From May Alice Jeffers слова песни

I`m an old woman typingOld as the year, seventy-eightHear what I sayI was born in Laurel, Mississippi,I live in North Carolina todayWith my grandson James. Now about the childrenI had five children before the Great DepressionFive more since then. All of them are living nowBut the one that died in the war.All the rest had children, too.CHORUS:Don`t blame the childrenEvery girl, every boy,They ain`t no burden,They`re my pride and joy.I know they`re beautifulLike leaves on a treeAnd as I am growing oldThey shelter me.I have worked at every kind of jobNursed people, preached, and sangWhen I was a young woman, I built roadsI have not worked a jobIn nineteen years--my grandchildrenTake care of me.Now listen to meBabies don`t cause poverty`Cause povertyIs just people never paid enough for what we done. You hear them talk--barefoot andPregnant. But I been barefootPregnant or not.CHORUSI have known socialistsThey stayed in my home in 1964For the vote driveThey were like my childrenI don`t care if they be black or whiteGod bless you and all the socialistsMy first husband was a MethodistWe did not drink but we did danceWhen we had our family picnicI think the white folks thought the coloredWas taking over, there was so many,And the young men still ask me to dance.CHORUS
