Текст песни Suzanne Vega - The Silver Lady

Suzanne Vega - The Silver Lady слова песни

When I was a little girlYounger than nine or tenI once spoke to the silver ladyBut I never saw her again. To me she flew out of the skyShe was born riding on the waterHer hair blew all around herShe was the crazy mans only daughter.I used to see her every dayRiding her golden ponyOnly once did I hear her laughAnd it echoed far and lonely.Once I watched the river runAnd I wandered too far from homeThere I met the silver ladyShe was crying, all alone.I said, "lady, why are you crying? If I had wings like youI would be flying over this riverAnd singing like only birds do."Well she threw back her head and she smiled at meHer tears, how they shone in the sunShe said, "i have no wings to fly withIf I did I would surely be gone."my brothers have all gone far awayTo follow their hearts and be freeBut I am the youngest and my father is ageingAnd all hes got left is me."i love my father dearlyMadman though he may beIt would break his heart if I should leave himBut this life is killing me."i feel the ocean pulling meThe breezes come and tell me thingsI want to go with them wherever they goAnd see what the new morning brings."So she sadly turned away from meSo I stumbled my way back homeThe next day I heard she had taken her horseAnd gone off to parts unknown. Her father stayed inside his lonely houseAnd he never more came into townHe could be seen roaming the riversideAnd they say that he jumped in and drowned.Long though I waited, she never returnedBut when I felt a silver breezeI knew she had sent it from wherever she wasTo tell us that now she was free.(july 2, 1974)
