Townes Van Zandt - The Silver Ships of Andilar слова песни

By townes van zandtOf those that sailed the silver shipsFrom andilar I am the lastThe deeds that rang our youthful dreamsIt seems shall go undoneNorth for the shores of valinorOur bows and crimson sails were madeOur captains were strong, our lances longAnd our liege the holy kingThe hills did turn from green to blueAnd vanish as on the decks we watchedBut every thought in that noble companyWas forward boundTo the lifeless plains of valinorWhere reigns the dark and frozen oneAnd with tongues afire and glorious eyesWe pledged our mission beThe clime from mild to bitter ranThe wind from fair to fierce did blowOath and prayer did turn to thoughtsOf homes left far behindLonged every man for some glimpse of landAnd the host that did await us thereBut each new day brought only a seaAnd sky of ice and grayThanks give no word can drag you throughThose endless weeks our ships did rollThanks give you cannot see those sailsAnd faces bleach and drawIce we drank and leather did chewFor the oceans are unwholesome thereThe dead that slid into the seasDid freeze before our eyesThen a wind did fling the ships apartEach one to go her separate wayThe sky did howl, the hull did groanFor how long I do not knowAnd what men were left when the winds had ceasedGrew dull and low of countenanceFor soldiers denied their battle plainOn comrades soon must turnSo one by one we died aloneSome by hunger, some by steelBodies froze where they did fallTheir souls unsanctifiedUntil only another and I were leftThen just before his flame did failWe shone ourselves brothers-in-armsTo serve the holy kingPerhaps this shall reach andilarAlthough I know not how it canFor once again hes hurled his windUpon the silver prowBut if it should my words are theseArise young men fine ships to buildAnd set them north for valinorneath standards proud as fire
