Minus.Driver hailed from Atlanta, GA, where vocalist Jordan Williams and bassist Lee met as high schoolers. The duo became Minus after uniting with guitarist Dustin and drummer Matt, and was soon struggling for gigs in the competitive Atlanta club and house party scene. Internet exposure led to a performance (alongside another young group, Incubus) on the short-lived TV show Farmclub; it was also around this point that threatened legal action persuaded Minus to change their name. The newly christened Minus.Driver was then snapped up by Universal in November 2002 and promptly sent to L.A., where the group recorded a five-song EP.
