Проект Of The Wand And The Moon появился в конце 90-ых годов, когда гитарист doom-metal группы Saturnus Ким Ларсен из-за неразрешимых творческих разногласий покинул коллектив и решил идти своим индивидуальным путем. Музыка его нового детища обнаруживала сильное влияние со стороны неофолка, и была весьма далека от того мелодичного death-doom, который обеспечил определенную популярность Saturnus среди метал-тусовки того времени.
В 1999 году выходит дебютный альбом Of The Wand And The Moon под названием “Nighttime Nightrhymes”. Красивые дарк-фолк композиции о любви, утрате, радости и древнегерманском языческом мистицизме перемежались экспериментальными дарк-эмбиент пьесами и ритуальной трайбл-перкуссией. Альбом по сути дела нанес Данию на карту современного европейского неофолка, поставив проект в один ряд с немецкими современниками – Darkwood, Sonne Hagal и Forseti.
В 2001 году увидел свет второй диск проекта “:Emptiness:Emptiness:Emptiness:”. Выдержанный в том же духе, что и первый альбом, но лучше спродюсированный и более богатый по саунду, релиз укрепил репутацию OTWATM. В том же году проект дает свой первый концерт, положивший начало целой серии живых выступлений, проходивших в течение нескольких последующих лет.
Вслед за изданием сплит-альбома с патриархами дарк-фолка Sol Invictus и нескольких виниловых синглов, в 2003 году был выпущен альбом “Lucifer”. Тематически связанный со своим названием, но при этом почему-то с удивленным котом на обложке, диск включал в себя различные редкие и неизданные вещи, относящиеся к раннему периоду OTWATM. В то же время выходит виниловый бокс-сэт, куда включаются все ранее изданные в цифровом формате треки, а также ряд эксклюзивных композиций.
В 2005-ом в качестве пробного шара для грядущего альбома выходит сингл «Hail! Hail! Hail!». Работа носит довольно экспериментальный характер, а в заглавном треке даже используются арабские аутентичные инструменты. Годом позже за синглом следует последний на данный момент альбом группы “Sonnenheim”, встретивший самую позитивную реакцию поклонников, а также получивший прекрасные отзывы критиков. Этот релиз окончательно делает Of The Wand And The Moon одним из ведущих проектов в своем жанре. Альбом продолжает углубленно изучать тему германского мистицизма (прекрасным примером этих изысканий является композиция «Nighttime in Sonnenheim»), при этом демонстрируя более экстравертный подход к музыке, которая теперь включает элементы martial и значительно менее сосредоточена на романтической любовной тематике, бывшей ранее визитной карточкой группы. After irreconcilable differences with his previous musical project, Saturnus, Larsen began writing music of a different vein, similar in style to his neofolk influences but very different than the doom metal he had previously created.
In 1999, the debut :Of the Wand & the Moon: album was released, entitled Nighttime Nightrhymes. Characterized by folk songs with themes ranging from expressions of love, loss, joy and ancestral Germanic paganism, the album was interspersed with experimental dark ambient pieces and tribal drumming. The album marked a new entry for Denmark in a new wave of Germanic post-industrial folk projects alongside contemporaries such as Forseti and Sonne Hagal.

Themed after its namesake yet featuring a photograph of a surprised cat on its cover, the record included various outtakes and unreleased tracks from the :Emptiness:Emptiness:Emptiness: period. A box set was also released featuring vinyl versions of previous recordings, as well as exclusive material.
A single entitled "Hail Hail Hail" was released in 2005 as a preview of upcoming material, showcasing a more experimental side of the project and making use of Arabic instrumentation for the title track. This was followed by a full length album entitled Sonnenheim which met to positive critical and fan reviews alike, marking the project as one of the major groups within its genre. The album further showcased themes of Germanic paganism, as exemplified by the title track "Nighttime in Sonnenheim" and introduced a more extroverted and thematically martial side of the project, with considerably less focus on the romantic love songs that had previously been hallmarks of the band's material.
