O Skank nasceu em 1991, em Belo Horizonte, capital das Minas Gerais, que deu orgulho ao Brasil de ter alçado ao mundo nomes como Milton Nascimento, Sepultura e tantos outros. Samuel Rosa (guitarra e voz), Henrique Portugal (teclados), Lelo Zaneti (baixo) e Haroldo Ferretti (bateria) reuniram-se em torno do mesmo interesse: transportar o clima do dancehall jamaicano para a tradição pop brasileira. O primeiro álbum , “Skank”, foi lançado de forma independente, em 1993, mas rapidamente o sucesso da banda na cena underground despertou o interesse da poderosa Sony Music. Skank is a pop/rock/reggae band in Brazil. The band started 1991, in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais.
The debut album, Skank (1993), was successful around the underground circuit. The second album, "Calango", came out in 1994 . “É Proibido Fumar”, “Te Ver”, “Pacato Cidadão”, “Jackie Teckila” and “Esmola” were the biggest hits.
In 1996, “Garota Nacional”, the single of "O Samba Poconé" gave Skank international success. The band travelled around the world, performing in Latin America, United States and Europe. In 1998, FIFA included “É uma partida de futebol” in the official World Cup soundtrack album.
From 1998 to 2004, Skank recorded 5 more albums: Siderado (1998), Maquinarama (2000), MTV ao Vivo em Ouro Preto (2001), Cosmotron (2003) and Radiola (2004). As of 2004, they have sold yet approximately 5,000,000 copies.
The last album Carrossel (2006) has less sound effects than the other albums, improving the harmony between vocals and guitar. “Uma canção é pra isso” and “Mil acasos” quiclky became radio hits and video clips.
