FRANKENBOK 2012

Hailing from Melbourne Australia, Frankenbok was born kicking and screaming in 1997. Now with 4 albums and 2 EP’s under their belt, their most recent release, deftly titled “THE END OF ALL YOU KNOW”, is by far the bands heaviest work to date. Musically it is a real blend of heavy metal styles, ranging from thrash, to punk to southern rock riffage and straight up heavy metal, all with a very Australian flavour and distinctive sound that the band have crafted over a 15 year existence. Thematically the album is a statement that the human race is on a one-way ticket to annihilation, dealt out by our own hand. The cover artwork is an entrancing, hand-painted magnum opus, depicting a full scale riot with the mob descending on a pyramid of the ‘eye of providence’, a symbol representing the modern social structure. They are intent on tearing it down - and themselves along with it. If the revolution was to ever occur, there would be no group loyalty, just total chaos, every man for himself each taking their bat, ball and smashing each other's heads in. It was painstakingly painted by Tom Emery, a good friend of the band and a truly phenomenal artist. The picture features over 1000 figures in incredible detail, and really must be seen to be believed.

Since 1997 Frankenbok have toured Australia and New Zealand many many times and shared the stage with the likes of Exodus, Slayer, Machine Head, System of A Down, Fear Factory, Malevolent Creation and Skinlab as well as the cream of Australian heavy metal. In their fine tradition of really getting amongst it, Frankenbok have spent the past year on the road in Australia & New Zealand, showcasing the new album and are chomping at the bit to pummel new audiences into the ground with their eclectic swag of ferocious ditties.

Still playing on the back of their latest album “The End of All You Know”, the quality of tonight’s set and the enthusiasm from the crowd as they lapped it all up showed that this band is truly a master of its craft after all that has been thrown at them.”

“Having never heard a song by this band before, and not knowing what to expect, I was a little excited to hear it. Things kicked off superbly with the powerful self-titled lead track on Frankenbok’s fourth full-length, ‘The End Of All You Know’. I am reminded immediately of ‘Vulgar Display Of Power’ era Pantera. This is of course a good thing. Things do not slow down a bit with the next monstrous track, the album’s first single, ‘Dine In Hell’, in fact, they speed up. And the speedy pace remains throughout the first seven tracks. It isn’t until the song ‘God Complex’ that we hear a slow intro. But it doesn’t last too long. ‘God Complex’ escalates to a frantic pace and is one of the best tracks on the record. The album finishes with the blistering ‘Never Say Die’. By the time this 3:44 song was over, I was short of breath and covered in sweat. I also felt like I just got smacked in the head with a bucket of cement. The guitar solo in this song is of epic proportions. Bassist Tim Miedecke’s backing voice is a great compliment to Dan McDougall’s lead vocals throughout the album. Check the tracks ‘Falling Down’, ‘Hypocrisy Democracy’, ‘Boiled In Blood’ and ‘Never Say Die’ for proof of this. Behind the kit, Mick Morley is a master skin shredder while Tim’s thunderous bass lines dot all the “’s” and cross all the “t’s.” I hear a slew of influences throughout ‘The End Of All You Know’. I already mentioned Pantera. Add to the mix Anthrax, Lamb Of God, Entombed and Napalm Death among others. While Frankenbok combine elements of these great bands into their sound, it’s their own crushing, death metal rhythms and thrashing riffs combined with Dan’s throaty vocals that make up the overall package that is Frankenbok. Each of the twelve tracks on ‘The End Of All You Know’ is unique. The band reinvent themselves over and over again thanks to their expert songwriting and precision musicianship. If it wasn’t for the unfaltering lyrics of Dan McDougall, you’d think that you were listening to a compilation consisting of twelve different bands. Australia has been on fire lately, producing some of the best new metal around, and now comes Frankenbok, my new newest favourite band, fifteen years into their career and showing no signs of slowing down. Heads up, it’s time to “DINE IN HELL!”
