Shinhoster went to Miami Northwestern and Edison high schools. He planned to pursue a career in football, until a car accident split a leg bone in half. Then he focused on music. Before gaining major stardom, Shinhoster performed at several urban Miami schools like Brownsville Middle School. He got his first break when another Liberty City talent, Trick Daddy, asked him to sing on his song Hold On. Atlantic Records heard it and asked to hear more. J-Shin was one of three artists signed through Miami label Slip-N-Slide to Atlantic.[1]
Additionally J-Shin released the controversial video "Baby Mama Drama" amid much fanfare and disgust in 2005.
