Cee-Why

North London DJ/Producer Cee-Why has been banging out beats for a good eleven years. A trained drummer from the age of 8, he moved on to DJing at 13, and some few thousand records later arrived his first sampler.

His formative years were spent playing at Funk jams in North London amongst musicians from bands such as D-influence, The Roots, Push and Galliano. His fascination with everything studio based soon landed him a job at Berwick Street Sound Studios where he worked for Goldie, Rob Playford, Photek and The Chemical Brothers before a 9 month stint at Boulevard Sound In Hollywood, CA. During this time he engineered for various up and coming Hip-Hop acts including most notably The Mexakinz. Upon returning to the UK, he joined the Loose Cannon collective who supported Billy Ocean, Omar and the Spice Girls at The Two Nations United concert in South Africa in 1997. As a member of Loose Cannon he also played a DJ residency at East London club Herbal every Saturday night, and leant his production skills to a number of projects across different musical genres.

It wasn’t long before Cee Why had a degree in Music Production under his belt after studying at London’s University Of Westminister where he met Jehst in 1999. Shortly after graduating he released his debut single on YNR, the adrenaline fuelled “Water Torture” (feat. Jehst and Tommy Evans) in 2001, which recently featured on the soundtrack to British blockbuster movie “Kidulthood”. The equally rugged B-side “The Great Escape” (feat. Universal Soldiers) later appeared on the YNR compilation CD “Young N Restless Vol. 1”, while an alternative remix by Universal Soldiers producer A H Fly appeared on the Universal Soldiers “Street Veterans Parts 1 & 2” CD on their own Tongue Tied Records imprint.

Subsequent production credits include “Die When You Die” from Jehst’s “Falling Down” LP (Low Life), Usmaan’s “Stay Focussed” (feat. Klashnekoff) b/w “Who Want It” (YNR), “Mourning Skies” (feat. Asaviour) from Tommy Evans “The Turbulent Times Of…” EP/CD (YNR) the classic posse cut and lead single from the “Young N Restless Vol. 1” compilation, “Seein’ Red” (feat. Farma G, Jehst, Skriblah and Sundragon) (YNR) and “Revolutions”, the lead single from Tommy Evan’s “New Years Revolutions” LP.

If that wasn’t enough his white label remix of The Infadels “Leave Your Body” won him mainstream appraisal and airplay from the legendary Radio 1 DJ John Peel (R.I.P) and helped the band secure their contract with Wall Of Sound. Phew!

Cee-Why is currently running the YNR Productions label in partnership with Jehst, while working on his own forthcoming instrumental project and producing for up and coming YNR young blood Jyager McTwist.
