“Welcome to Soul UK, my celebration of some of the home grown artists and soulful tracks that have inspired me. Some of these artists have had enormously successful careers, others have had glimpses of success, and others have never really been given due attention and respect. All these songs, artists and writers have in various ways contributed to my own career in music, and deserve to be recognised for cutting a path that enabled me and every other British Soul/Urban act without exception to walk more easily. This is why I have made this album, it is a labour of love, and my tribute to heroes both celebrated and unsung.”
Track listing -
Fairplay
Originally released by Soul II Soul 1988 - UK #63 from album 'Club Classics Vol One' - UK #1 / US #14

This was absolutely rinsed in all the clubs and on pirate radio. This track made me wish I looked old enough to sneak past the doormen! I didn't want to touch Soul II Soul's biggest hits as they are sacred in my mind, but this was just as brilliant and deserved to be as well known.
Southern Freeez
Originally released by Freeez 1982 - UK #8 from album 'Southern Freeez' - UK #17

I have loved this since hearing it as a child. I always thought it sounded so sophisticated, with its uplifting chords. It's a summer drive with the top down, fabulous song.
Mama Used To Say
Originally released by Junior 1982 - UK #7 / US #30 / US R&B #2 from album 'Ji' - UK #28

I think this was everyone's favourite track at the time and is still played on every "club classics" radio show in the country. It’s still so fresh and just brings a smile whenever I sing it. It was an obvious choice for the album and a no-brainer for the choice of first single.
Say I'm Your Number One
Originally released by Princess 1985 - UK #7 from album 'Princess' - UK #15

So few people would make the connection from the men behind Jason, Kylie and Rick Astley, to this seriously soulful song! I saw Princess on Top of the Pops doing this, and loved it straight away. I had no idea it was British, or written/produced by Pete Waterman and crew until later.
When You Gonna Learn
Originally released by Jamiroquai 1992 - UK #28 from album 'Emergency On Planet Earth' - UK #1

I remember hunting this record down while I was doing my degree and on finding it, I was shocked to find it was not a rare groove, or from the States but new and British. The lyrics were so far ahead of their time, and Jay's words still ring true today. This was their first single, it gave them acclaim and set them on the path to global success.
Apparently Nothin’
Originally released by Young Disciples 1991 - UK #13 from album 'The Road To Freedom' - UK #21

This was one of those moments when the clubs successfully educated radio on what they should be championing, and the public "got" it, and it was a smash. I was one of that buying public. Lyrically this is sheer brilliance and relevant for every generation. Roots Manuva's additional verse just adds even more weight to the message of the song.
There's Nothing Like This
Originally released by Omar 1991- UK #14 from album 'There's Nothing Like This' - UK #19

If you ask anyone involved in the soul genre, they will mention Omar as an influence. Seriously underrated, massively influential worldwide, he pioneered the neo-soul that made Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, D'Angelo and Common successful.
Don't Be A Fool
Originally released by Loose Ends 1990 - UK #12 / US R&B #10
from the album 'Look How Long' - UK #19 / US R&B #28

Like Soul II Soul, Loose Ends’ massive influence on the sound of Britain cannot be ignored. This was another pirate radio smash, played to death in my bedroom with a punchy direct message. I especially loved the line "sort your life out", spoken in the original version. I sang it in mine, it would have sound daft if I had tried to do the same!
Always And Forever
Originally released by Heatwave 1977 - UK #9 / US #18 / US R&B #2 from album 'Too Hot To Handle' - UK #46 / US #11

One of the greatest love songs ever written, by one of the greatest and most successful songwriters of all time. Rod Temperton is a British phenomenon. It has been done before, but I really wanted to sing this.
Round And Around
Originally released by Jaki Graham 1985 - UK #9
from album 'Heaven Knows' - UK #48

Jaki Graham is from my hometown. I once got her autograph in Wolverhampton's department store! Whenever I saw or heard her, I felt so proud. I followed every move she made in her career and thought to myself if she can make it happen, so can I. This song was so ripe for a new version to give it a classic sound.
Cuddly Toy
Originally released by Roachford 1988 - UK #4 / US #25
from album 'Roachford' - UK #11

Roachford showed a cynical British media that British soul could also be fused with a rockier sound and not only work, but be a global hit. This, as well as many of his songs, influenced my own writing style.
Damn
Originally released by Lewis Taylor 1996
from album 'Lewis Taylor' - uncharted

The overwhelming majority of music lovers won't have heard of Lewis Taylor which is a desperate shame as he is touched by genius. I want everyone to know and love his work. My favourite track from his debut album.
One More Try
Originally released by George Michael 1988 - UK #8 / US #1 / US R&B #1
from album 'Faith' - UK #1 / US #1 /US R&B #1

Everyone knew who George Michael was, but this song is when he became the real thing in my mind. He channelled a gospel sound, black America, ate it up, Britain followed and then the whole world. I took that sound, and going back to my own church roots, I ran with it.

Beverley Knight MBE (born 22 March 1972), born Beverley Ann Smith, is a critically acclaimed British soul singer, songwriter and record producer who released her debut album in 1995. Heavily influenced by soul greats such as Sam Cooke and Aretha Franklin, Knight has released five studio albums and one compilation collection to date. Widely labelled as one of Britain's greatest soul singers, Knight is best known for her hit singles "Greatest Day", "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" and "Come As You Are" and "Made It Back". After a decade in the industry, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Urban Music Awards in 2004.

In 2006 Knight starred in BBC1 music TV show, Just The Two Of Us, and is the host of the Radio 2 show Beverley's Gospel Nights, which explores the origins and impact of gospel music. Now in its second season, the show has featured interviews with stars such as Destiny's Child and Shirley Caesar.

Knight is an ambassador for many charities such Christian Aid and has travelled to areas affected by disease and poverty to help raise awareness. She is an active campaigner for anti-Aids organisations such as the Stop AIDS Campaign and The Terrence Higgins Trust and is also a vocal campaigner against homophobic lyrics in urban music. She became an MBE in 2006, the only musician to be granted such an honour in the Queen's eightieth birthday honours list.

In February 2006 Knight consolidated her move into the mainstream audience by appearing on BBC1 music show, Just The Two of Us. The show, featuring celebrities who duet with established singers, ran for two weeks and proved to be a relative disappointment in terms of audience figures – averaging between fifteen and twenty-five percent audience shares.[17] Nevertheless it provided a platform for Knight to reach out to a bigger audience and demonstrate her talent by performing a different array of songs than she would otherwise be known for. Reaching out to new audiences was also a driving force behind Knight’s decision to join Take That on their reunion arena tour. Take That - The Ultimate Tour 06, which ran from April to July 2006, sold 270,000 tickets in less than four hours on sale at the box office and featured Knight as a support act.

In March 2006 Beverley released her fifth album, a compilation set featuring the majority of her top forty UK singles entitled Voice - The Best Of Beverley Knight. The album, which was certified Gold less than a month after its release,[19] became her second highest charting of her career when it entered the UK albums chart at number ten and rose to number nine a month later. It was preceded by the single "Piece of my Heart" – a cover of the Erma Franklin classic made famous by Janis Joplin and entered the singles chart at number sixteen, spending eleven weeks inside the UK top 75 singles chart and becoming her longest-running chart single to date.

In October 2006, Knight recorded her fifth studio album, Music City Soul, in Nashville. Completed in less than five days, the album was released on 7 May 2007 and features collaborations with musicians such as Ronnie Wood and Scotty Moore. It has spawned three singles thus far, "No Man's Land", released on 16 April 2007, "After You", released on 2 July 2007 and "The Queen of Starting Over", released on 15 October 2007.

Beverley will be releasing her next album in spring 2009.
