There are at least two artists by the name of Syria;
1 - Pop female singer from Italy
2 - Christian Dörge's Darkwave band from Germany
1. Cecilia Cipressi, the real name of Syria, was born in Rome in 1977. Her artistic debut was at the San Remo festival in 1995, and since then, she's been participating in that festival with different results. The same 1995 won in the cathegory of "Sanremo Giovani" with Loredana Berte's song Sei Bellissima; in 1996 won in the cathegory of "Giovani", this time with the track Non ci sto and she recorded her first album. In 1997 she participates once again, in the category "Big", and she got the third position with the song Sei tu. In 1997 she recorded her second album too, called L'angelo.
After Station Wagon (1998) she sang the italian version of the song Reflection on Mulan's Disney Picture soundtrack. In 2000 she wrote her first text, in collaboration with Marina Rei: the song was Maledetto il giorno and the album Come una goccia d'acqua, produced by Biaggio Antonacci.
Then came Le mie favole (2002), with many self compositions. In 2003 she went to the Festival of San Remo and sang Jovanotti's song L'amore e'. The same year a reedition of the album Le mie favole with this new song plus Aria came out. Her last album is Non e' peccato (2005). Nowadays she's making theater, Chiamatemi Kowalsky.

2. SYRIA was formed in 1993, based around Christian Dörge. Inspired to begin with a dark, slow-down-goth-sound (in the early days...) with electro and ethno elements. Subsequently (since 2005) teaming up with Zasu and Stina Suntland, who also formed their own band THE ATOMIC NURSES, the group returned with trip-hop, surreal chansons and experimental electro-pop things, which initially yielded the albums 'The Return Of Saturn' (2006), 'The Kafka Syndrome' (2007) and 'The Grotesque' (2008, this one as part of the 4-CD-Box 'Not A Nice Party. A Collection')) - like all SYRIA records produced, arranged and mixed by Christian Dörge himself.
Describing the years 2005 - 2009 as the most extraordinary trip of SYRIAs existence, the band was inspired to collect a ride down the memory lane, mainly to see these gifts remain in action, meaning: On March 20th 2009, Black October-Records released the 44-track double-album 'The Learner's Dictionary Of Style - Best Of 2005 - 2009' with eight new un-released songs included, comprising the classical and the traditional SYRIA and watching out on some future sounds and topics. This album was accompanied by the exclusive and all-new 8-track mini-album 'First Person Shooter'.
And in October 2009, the band released a second 44-track compilation: 'The Return Of The Cybernauts - Best Of 2005 - 2009, vol. 2', with seven new, un-released songs on the list. Now, tickets are open for the writing and recording of the 11th SYRIA studio-album - production started in January 2009 as a daytrip to the Marlene-dressed-as-electric-widow themepark; recordings and mixings were finished in the meantime, showing up that in the end, the end is still not the end. This new album will be released in May 2010.
