Strawbs - The Vision Of The Lady Of The Lake слова песни

The boatman rose to the sound of his heartbeatLoud in the silent approach of the dawnHe glanced through the window at mist on the lakeWhich hung like a shroud in the still of the mornThe silver cobwebs spun with the dewHung from the bushes in filigree splendourAnd water lilies asleep on the lakeWere reflected so delicate, tranquil and tender. The boat man sighed as he strode through the woodsTo the place where his boat lay moored to a stakeThe hollow sound as his footsteps echoedUntil the sound was lost on the lakeHe cast off, poling the boat from the shorePeering a head through damp clinging hazeHe thought that he saw strange swirling shapesA trick on the eyes that the mist often plays. So intent was the boatman on crossing the lakeThat he failed to notice the current that flowedLeading his boat from familiar partsHe was firmly, yet somehow unknowingly, towedAll at once the mist seemed to liftSufficient to show the boatman a poolThat he`d never seen in the whole of his lifeUnnaturally deep, black and silent, and cool. The boatman`s shirt clung to his backHe was sweating both from exertion and fearHe had the sensation that someone was watchingHe felt the presence of somebody nearAn invisible force prevented him movingThe strength of his arms was utterly sappedThe twisted bushes converged round the lakeLike a fish in a net he was trapped.Suddenly out of the water before himThe wraith-like form of a maiden appearedClad in shimmering radiant robesThe maiden materialised as she nearedThe hair which finely crowned her headWas a halo of golden reflecting the sunAll of the beautiful women of timeWere formed all at once into one.She handed the boatman the sword she was holdingWhich flashed irridescent before his eyesExcalibur surely was hardly a matchFor a sword that simple description defiesThe boatman stood transfixed by her gazeWhich reached to the depths of his very soulTo he who could conquer the evils of lifeShe offered herself as a whole. The maiden vanished before his gazeLeaving him clutching the sword in his fistThe hairs on the nape of his neck seemed to stiffenA creature approached him from out of the mistIt was powerful, huge and yet stupid indeedFor it held right back and failed to attackThe boatman struck at its small stupid eyesAnd it crashed to the ground and lay on its back.Without a warning the sky seemed to blackenAs though the sun were in total eclipseThe boatman crouched low as a vast eagle swoopedAnd a horrified cry escaped from his lipsIt strutted before him with pride in its bearingAdmiring its talons both vicious and cruelTaking advantage the boatman struck fastAnd the eagle slid to the depths of the pool. The terrified boatman tried moving his boatBut his pole had grown roots in the watery deepThe bank grew alive with the coils of a snakeAnd all you could hear was its slither and creepIt cast an envious stare at the boatmanSlid into the water and swam to the boatHe stood hypnotised by its green jealous eyesAs it came from the water and coiled round his throat. As its coils tightened slowly his breath came in gaspsAs he choked so he lifted the sword in despairAs the snake was still gloating he severed its headAnd in death the snake`s coils thrashed wild in the airThe boatman wiped the sweat from his browHis heart was pounding as never beforeHis eyes like a lizard`s tongue darted aroundNot daring to rest for a minute or more.An involuntary shiver went up his spineAs he heard the sound of eerie howlsA wolf appeared on the banks of the poolSaliva dripped from its loathsome jowlsHatred smouldered deep in his eyesWhich glowed like coals from Hades fireIt seemed to grow as it crouched and snarledAnd watched as the boatman began to tire.It was almost as though the wolf had learnedFor it did not attack as the others had doneBut bided its time until the moment was rightAnd sprang as the boatman stared into the sunBut the boatman too had learned to hold backAnd holding his sword as though a knifeHe plunged it deep into the wolf`s heartThen fell to his knees and prayed for his life.As he felt a hand on his shoulder he whirledTo find the maiden by his sideShe smiled and the world seemed to open before himHe tried to speak but his tongue was tiedYou must plunge the sword deep into my heartLest I should crumble into dustShe offered the boatman the meaning of lifeAnd love, if he could but conquer lust. She bared her breasts before his eyesThe boatman still was stricken dumbHe flung the sword back into the waterBack to the depths from which it had comeThe water around him began to boilThe maiden began to wither awayHis boat was swamped as the creatures aroseAnd evil lived for another day.
