Хип-хоп коллектив из Детроита, в состав которого входят Sonny Star, Texture, Buff 1, Vital, 14KT, Grand Cee, DJ Haircut.

Athletic Mic League is an Ann Arbor hip-hop group composed of six MCs and a DJ. Members are Tres (Sonny Star) Allen, Jamal (Buff (1) ) Bufferd, Drew (DJ Haircut) Cohen, Mike (Grand Cee) Fletcher, Vaughan (Texture) Taylor, Wesley (Vital) Taylor and Kendall (14KT) Tucker.

The Athletic Mic League is a bit of an anomaly in hip-hop, with a certain satirical charm. Its bench full of MCs makes for interesting variations with wordplay and phonetics, but the group has a consistent, fast-break approach that is easy on the ear and utterly infectious.

Athletic Mic League has performed locally at the Heidelberg, Leopold's and St. Andrew's Hall. The group has also shared the stage with Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Obie Trice, Jurassic 5, Eminem and Slum Village.

AML met in 1994 at Ann Arbor Huron High School. "We were all friends and knew each other from playing ball," Haircut says. The fun and games evolved into a more serious approach to writing, as the members began to collect gear to record music. "We were making beats at our parents' house," Texture says." It was 1997 when the group emerged from the basement.

Vital, Texture, Buff and DJ Haircut attended the University of Michigan. 14KT studied at Florida A&M and Eastern Michigan University. Sonny Star attended the University of Alabama. Grand Cee has three children.

In 1998, AML released the demo "The Thrill of Victory, the Agony of Defeat." Bobbito, an influential New York DJ, featured it on his radio show, sparking the group to relocate to the East Coast. "We had a parents' meeting with all of our families. We moved to New Jersey for one year in 1999," Haircut says.

"Six people, 1 bathroom, 3 people per bedroom. We did go out there and have support," Vital says. "What we gathered out there was writing inspiration for the 'Sweats and Kicks' album." Vital says.

"We learned enough and we didn't need to be there," Texture says.

"We had to fight for own spot back in Ann Arbor," Haircut says. "We had to reestablish." The group composed a remix project, "The Thrill is Gone," continuing to garner interest and performing regularly. "Sweats N' Kicks" was released nationally in 2002.

The 7 man crew known as the Athletic Mic League came together while still attending high school in Ann Arbor, MI. Buff1, 14KT, Grand Champ, Sunny Star, Texture, and Vital joined forces with DJ Haircut and after two years of love and support from the local hip-hop community they made it official. Athletic Mic League was out to show the world what their brand of hip-hop was all about.

By 1998 AML had blessed high school talent shows, house parties, and hip-hop nights across Detroit. Following up with their underground classic demo The Thrill is Gone, the buzz grew to deafening levels. In 1999 they settled in Jersey City, quickly building their reputation and skills in the neighboring New York hip-hop scene.

They capitalized on their growing notoriety by dropping their debut album Sweats & Kicks which received rave reviews from the streets and hip-hop tastemakers alike. It also afforded them the opportunity of a lifetime. Their music was heard by Yasser Khan, an upstart manager out of Detroit's Barak Records. He was enthralled by their sound, and immediately set out to find what he knew was a once-in-a-career group. He introduced them to Barak's CEO, RJ Rice. Rice, a well-known record industry executive and the man behind seminal Detroit rap group Slum Village, recognized that AML had their finger on the pulse of what hip-hop needed: an infusion of energy and originality.
